Last year the world was fascinated with one small red paperclip. Perhaps you heard the story of the young man who, through a series of 14 trades, went from owning a red paperclip to owning a house in Kipling, Saskatchewan.
As I heard about Kyle MacDonald’s venture to continually trade up until he had a house, my first thoughts were, “are you serious - get a life” and then as I followed the story, they changed to “wow, what an enterprising young man” and finally to asking myself the question, “what would happen in my life if I was more creative like him?”
Would you agree that many times we stop short of what we really want in life because we think that:
A. We can’t really have what we want because we have been disappointed in the past
B. We don’t know HOW to get what we want so we stop believing that we can have what we want
C. We don’t even know WHAT we want?
Just think of an area in your life where you don’t have what you want. Money, health, relationships, a career that you love - what is it for you? Then ask yourself one question: WHY don’t I have what I want?
Let’s say it’s money as that is a biggie for many people. You may not have the money you want because:
1. You don’t get paid enough at your job or you don’t charge enough for your services or products
2. You spend more than you earn
3. You have a problem saving money
4. You don’t know how to invest money wisely
5. You believe that poverty is your destiny, your family heritage or “just the way it is”
6. Or admit it - You’re too lazy to change any of the above situations</p>
There may be more but make your list. It’s a fascinating exercise because there is truly NO difference between Kyle MacDonald who got exactly what he wanted - a house for a red paper clip - and YOU. No difference at all, except one small detail.
Kyle took action and did something. He did something different, out of the box, potentially risky from a humiliation point of view and he didn’t stop until he got what he wanted. He didn’t settle for the 1995 truck on his 8th trade but he persevered. Amazingly, it only took him 365 days to accomplish his goal!
What about you? You have a red paperclip in your life. It may be a book that you have never published, a song you wrote and never sung, it may be an invention you have hidden in your garage or a talent that you have never cultivated. I don’t know but you do.
Ask yourself: What is my red paperclip?
Can you create more money, better health, incredible relationships in your life, and the career of your dreams? Absolutely. But you do need to take action. That red paper clip did not automatically become the house at 503 Main Street, Kipling, Saskatchewan simply by dreaming, visioning, meditating or wishful thinking. Kyle took action and you need to also. He set an intent and went for it.
Will you do the same? I sure hope so! Make it a game, a challenge, a fun intent to see what you can change, create and manifest. Then look back 365 days from now and see what you traded your red paperclip for in your life! Yes, that is a challenge! Will you take me up on it
With love and light!
